Herbivore – grass, herbs, shoots, bark, leaves of shrubs and trees
Description
The American bison is a large even-toed ungulate that can weigh up to 1,500 kg and reach a length of up to 3.8 metres. When running, a bison can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h.
Appearance
The American bison has a massive body structure that gives it a majestic appearance. Its coat is brown, thick and longer on the head and chest, making these parts of the body appear even more robust.
Behaviour
American bison gather in large herds that can number tens of thousands of individuals; in winter, however, they split into smaller groups to make finding food easier.
Reproduction
Female bison give birth to one calf after a 10-month gestation period and nurse it for about one year.
